You’re a creative, I’m a creative, hell, we’re all creatives. That’s why you’ll have many different passions throughout your life.
You grow out of some passions and into other passions throughout the course of your existence. It’s normal and expected because you have hundreds of thousands of experiences; the food of a life well lived.
In this post, I’m going to show how to avoid falling into the trap of asking “What are you passionate about?” and what you should be doing instead.
Doing it the right way will allow you to dominate with any business you decide to set up and augh all the way to the bank.
Let’s Get Started
There’s one polarizing billionaire who’s turned the follow your passion advice into something laughable.
Back in 2012 Mark Cuban wrote don’t follow your passion, follow your effort.
His reasoning goes thus; when you put time into something, you become good at it.
When you become good at something, you enjoy it more and develop passion around it.
When you develop passion around it, you work even harder to become the best and that’s when you reap the rewards of passion.
He makes salient points, but I don’t agree with everything he says.
How can you put in the necessary effort when you don’t like what you’re doing?
It’s a commonly accepted axiom that it takes 10,000 hours to achieve mastery (it can actually take much less time if you know how to apply your practice).
Are you going to put in an insane amount of time into something you have no love for in order to achieve expertise?
I didn’t think so and I’m sure you don’t relish the idea either.
That’s not the only reason you shouldn’t blindly follow your passion.
By their very nature, passions are peculiar. You may like to collect stamps, toenail clippings (strange but I’ve seen it) or love the way the stars align on warm summer nights (whatever floats your boat).
These are all cool on their own, but there probably isn’t a very good way to build a seven figure business around it.
So for all those people who give you the incomplete advice “just do what you’re passionate about; it’ll all work out in the end.”
I wish I could tie all of them up, put them in a warehouse, lock the door, and set the place on fire.
It wouldn’t end there, I’d go on a personal crusade to remove the just follow your passion mantra for our collective psyches.
Think about it
The reason why this advice sucks arse is because not all passions are meant to be chased with reckless abandon for a few good reasons.
I have a different take, are you ready for it?
In his Ted Talk, Mike Rowe (God bless him) throws sand in the face of the age-old advice “follow your passion.”
He gives the example of a pig farmer he worked with on one episode. The farmer realized the food thrown out from the Vegas strip buffets was full of protein and made the perfect feed for his live-stock.
Over time, that pig farmer has amassed millions of dollars because he was able to identify a need that he had the skills to fulfill.
I’m a millennial and I’ve been told since I could walk that I should just follow my passions. The problem with this line of thinking is that I’ll always be looking inside for answers to how I’m going to be successful.
Instead of opening my eyes and figuring out what people actually want and need in the world.
Even though I’m probably one of the biggest advocates for striking out on your own and being an entrepreneur, there are dozens of jobs nobody seems to care about.
It’s probably because of all the follow your passion advice making the rounds.
Yes, you should like what you’re doing and as you get better at it you’ll become more and more passionate about it.
What’s just as important in the beginning is being able to solve a real world problem people have using skills you possess and can further develop.
Now, before we jump into this one, I want to ask you something.
Have you ever had a job?
Did you get paid for said job?
Then you can get paid for selling services under the umbrella of your own business.
Here’s an example.
Let’s say you’re a private tutor that works for a small company.
You drive to the homes of their clients and tutor kids a few times a week. You drive there with your car, tutor them with your knowledge, and grade the students based on a curriculum you developed.
The only real use you have for the company you work for is connecting you with enough people to make ends meet.
For all of this, you get paid about $18 dollars an hour while the company is getting paid closer to $100 an hour in some places. You’re basically being hired by a brokerage firm.
But what’s actually stopping you from turning that skill into a very lucrative business for yourself?
Is it the time it’ll take to get it off the ground?I hate to sound cliche but the time will pass anyways.
Nothing but you really.
You can start a “bargain” version of the service and sell your services for only $50 an hour. Eventually, you’ll be able to turn into your very own broker.
This is just one way to use your skills, skills that you may be passionate about to live a life many other people can only imagine.
The founder of http://hearandplay.com built a multi-million dollar business by identifying what he was really good at.
After identifying that skill, he looked around and answered the question “is this skill solving a real life problem or pain?”
The rest is history. He has millions of people coming to his website to learn how to play music by ear.
He did it by asking himself the right question in the beginning rather than just following the advice of his friends and family.
What are you passionate about? One of the funniest questions I hear because people ask it like it can solve all the problems in the world.
Instead of only looking inside of yourself to discover what can help you live an unfettered life. Look around you and decide what you can offer to the most people that will add value to their life.
This can be almost anything and as long as you have the skill for it, you can turn it into a viable business and do what others can only dream of.
