In this ActiveCampaign review I’m going to show you why I made the switch from other players to ActiveCampaign and haven’t looked back. In short, I’m going to give you honest reviews of what I believe are the most endearing features of ActiveCampaign.
It’s an honest ActiveCampaign review but it’s not unbiased. It’s very biased because it’s the software I’ve been using for about a year. I’ve used it to launch products, I’ve used it to create epic sales funnels, and I’ve used it to build a thriving tribe.
If I said it was unbiased then we’d both know I was lying. In this ActiveCampaign Review, I’m going to walk you through a few of the ways to use the software, some of the best features, and a few of the drawbacks of the platform.

There are countless ways to segment your mailing list. You can segment based on behavior, optin offer, engagement, location, or whatever else is important to you. With certain email marketing applications, it’s difficult to segment your list of contacts.

With ActiveCampaign, the power to segment your mailing list effectively is inbuilt. Of course, you can start with the optin offer which comes standard. If they download a particular ebook or sign up for training you’ll add them to a specific list.
ActiveCampaign lets you go deeper. After you add them to a list, what next? For starters, you can add multiple tags to find the right people and promote relevant offers.
You can also segment them further based on links they click while in they’re part of your mailing list.
Let’s say they’re going through an automation about beginner weight loss. They click on two links to relevant blog posts. Using that information, you can set conditions to segment them into a different list and start a new automation.
Conversely, you can segment them out of a list or grouping based on actions they didn’t take. Let’s say they go through the same automation for beginner weight loss but they didn’t open a single email. You can segment them out of that list and add them to another.
Or maybe they opened a few emails, but didn’t click on any of the links, you can segment them differently and follow up with them.
The backbone of a successful email marketing campaign — automation. Not just any automation, but the kind that works with your subscribers to give them the best experience possible.
That means setting up your automations with specific triggers. Triggers based on actions they take on your website and interactions with your emails. Email marketing automation can get complicated — fast.
The reason I like the ActiveCampaign automation so much is because of its visual nature and intuitive interface. It’s simple to use. GetResponse was rolling out this feature in early 2016, but it was only available to a small segment of their customers.
With ActiveCampaign, it comes standard.
Let’s look at a simple automation with a few conditions to illustrate the power of this software.
It took me a few minutes to set up the following automation2 the emails are drafts, so if you factor in the time it takes to write them then you’re looking at much more than 5 min .
Let’s say you’re running a simple three-part video series. To get access, people have to part with their email address. At the end of that three-part training, you pitch a relevant product or service. In order for the pitch to be successful, they need to watch all three videos.
The third one is the most important because after the training, you pitch your product. People are busy, they don’t check all of their emails and they don’t always click through. Successful email automation takes that into account and sends the right message.
Here’s a variation of what that automation can look like in the wild.
The first three emails are straightforward, but you’ll notice there are two conditional triggers there. We want to make sure your subscribers are opening and clicking the link to the video.
If they open the second email, but don’t click through, they’ll get another email in a few days with a new subject line and more compelling email content. It still leads to the same video.
After they click through and watch the second video, the automation continues to the third video. You can drag the endpoint of one condition based email flow and merge it with the other one. This cuts down on your workload.
The third video is the most important so you want to make sure they watch it. You’ll repeat the step you took for people who didn’t open or click through to the third video3 if you’re using a software like Wistia, you can track how much of the video people watched. If they dropped off in the first half of the video, you can send a follow-up email mentioning that while you try to get them to watch the rest of the video. If they stopped as soon as you started to pitch, you can send an email recapping what you said and continue the process. .
In this simple automation, you have a number of conditions based on your subscriber’s behavior. Each one is designed to improve open rates and click through rates.
You’ve pitched your product/service and you’ll want to treat the people who visited your landing page differently than the people who didn’t. You’ll set up another condition.
This condition segments the people who visited your landing page but didn’t buy and the ones who didn’t. At the same time, you’ll want to create a trigger to remove people who’ve already purchased.
You’ll send different emails to each group. The group that ignored your landing page probably isn’t convinced enough in the product or service to check it out. The next few emails you send are geared towards getting them on that page.
After each email, you’ll need to set up conditions. If they check out the sales page, they can be merged into the segment that’s receiving specific emails based on that action.
On the other half of the automation, the people who visited the sales page but didn’t buy should have some objections. The emails you send to them will face the biggest objections people have when it comes to your product or service.
After you send a few emails, it’s time to pitch one last time and end the automation, you don’t want your new friends to get annoyed. End the automation and send them to another one or into a list to receive your regular emails.
As you can see, ActiveCampaign gives you a lot of control of your email marketing based on actions people are taking. Instead of sending a series of emails that are set in stone, the way people interact with them determines what they see and don’t see.
It’s through simple yet thoughtful automations like this that you’re able to increase revenue without increasing your workload.

I built the automation I showed you from scratch. If you’re a complete novice or don’t have the time to build one, you can always use one of their pre-made email marketing campaigns. They have everything from re-engagement campaigns to sales follow up campaigns.
After choosing one, all you need to do is adjust the setting, add in your emails, and activate it. It’ll start running in the background and pulling in more revenue for your business. The pre-made templates work across a wide range of industries.
The most important part is having the basic structure, from there, you can tweak it to make sure it aligns with your brand.
Reporting is important, you need to know what’s working and what isn’t so you can make changes accordingly. ActiveCampaign lets you keep a bead on the most important metrics to your business. Everything from list growth to your most engaged contacts are displayed on your dashboard.
If you want to drill down into the performance of individual campaigns or entire automations it’s as simple as going to your reports section. There, you can analyze the data and make smart decisions to improve your email marketing.
This is something I look for in any software. It either needs to have a Zapier integration or it needs to integrate directly with a wide range of services.
I use many pieces of software to bring The Experiment together and the backbone of that is email marketing. Even if ActiveCampaign doesn’t integrate with the software I’m using, as long as they both integrate with Zapier, I’m fine.
The single biggest drawback I can think of for this ActiveCampaign review is the sheer amount of features. There’s a steep learning curve if it’s your first time out. The software has been built to allow you to get a lot out of it even if you’re a novice when it comes to email marketing.
Even so, you’ll leave many of the features untouched because it’s a lot to take in. It can be complicated mapping out stop triggers. Goals may throw you for a loop when you first try your hand at them. It’s natural, the more you use any tool, the more vested you become, and the easier it gets.
ActiveCampaign is a simple tool to learn and use. If you’ve used email marketing software before then you should be right at home. That doesn’t mean there isn’t a learning curve. There are a lot of features and if you don’t take the time to learn them, you’ll be leaving a lot on the table.
ActiveCampaign doesn’t have a built-in shopping cart like some of the more expensive solutions like Infusionsoft or Ontraport. That wasn’t a problem for me because I use Memberpress for my digital products. It integrates directly with ActiveCampaign.
Even though they don’t have a shopping cart, as long as the software you’re using has a Zapier integration, you’ll be fine.
The scope of what you can do with ActiveCampaign is amazing. I’m just going to give you a few suggestions here.
